Session One

This is planned as a face-to-face live event to be held outdoors in the Sullivan’s yard.  In case of inclement weather, will move inside with social distancing and open windows.  Due to COVID precautions, we will not be serving food to share. Participants should plan to bring their own snacks to accompany the wine. You are welcome to bring your own glass, but do not need to do so.

It has been said that Italy is not a country, it is a vineyard. There are plenty of vineyards in Italy, but what is really surprising is that there is a plethora of wine grape varieties. This Teach & Taste will explore some of the Italian grape varieties that, hopefully, will be new to you.

For the white wines, we will sample a Prosecco from the Vineto (Venice) region. We will taste a Vernaccia di San Gimignano from Tuscany. Although vineyardists have tried to grow this grape elsewhere, the grape is at home near the walled city of San Gimignano. We will then taste a white blend from Umbria crafted with Grechetto, Procanico, Verdello, and Canaiolo Blanco grapes.

For reds we will taste a Brunello di Montalcino (Tuscany) made from Sangiovese grapes. We then will taste a Barolo from Northern Italy Piedmonte Wine Region made from the Nebbiolo grape. Our red wine tasting will end with a Sagrantino from Umbria.

Italian wines have a huge selection. Many of the wines in this tasting will pair nicely with the holidays.
