Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is a 2,800-enclave in Edgewater, MD overlooking the Chesapeake Bay offering hiking trails, a museum, and marshlands. This will be the fifth straight year that we have done this hike with The Village in Howard. For those new to this hike, there will be a one-minute presentation by staff at 9:50 AM in the Museum. Everyone will have a choice of a one-mile leisurely walk on the Java Trail (marked in Blue) and to the Rhode River lead by Susan Eberhard; a more extensive two-mile hike beyond the Java Trail onto the Marsh Walkway (Marked in Red) in surrounding woodlands led by John Eberhard or a four-mile hike led by Fran Herron from MIHA on the Contee Trail (Marked n Yellow) down to the Sellman Creek. This group will park in the parking lot of the Contee Trail.
Meet at the Oakland Mills Interfaith Center; the Meeting House at 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia, MD 21045 at 9:00 AM to form carpools. If driving on your own, plan to be at SERC at 9:50 AM to be in time for the staff presentation.
Around noon, the groups will leave SERC to go to Mike’s Crab House located at 3030 Riva Road, Riva, MD 21140 for a delightful lunch. For menu, go to www.mikescrabhouse.com. Phone (410)956-2784. We should be home around 2:00.
