Welcome to history!

It is not often that we have four TVIH members give a presentation on their visit to Europe in an area with a recent war of true historical significance.  Our two couples, Kathy and Mike O’Rourke and Jane and Kim Sherman, will make September 17 an exceptional event [start time 7pm].

Prior to visiting Croatia in October 2019, each couple had visited grandchildren in western Europe and then flew to Dubrovnik where they toured together.  Now that is cool!  The two couples experienced Dubrovnik extensively, mostly on self-guided tours.  It is one of the very few cities with ancient walls.  These walls were damaged during a recent war (1991-95) with neighboring countries that was a result of economic envy following the breakup of Yugoslavia.  Very sad!  Fortunately, the city and walls have been totally restored and tourism is now an important industry to the community.

Dubrovnik is about the size of Lake Kittamaqundi and this provided an ideal size for our four visitors to walk, dine, tour and have ice cream every day.  Their trip included two side trips, one along the Dalmatian Coast that featured the city of Split which is a vibrant port and has an ancient city center.  The other city was through scenic Bosnia-Herzegovina to Mostar, a multi-religious city of narrow streets and exciting markets.  Private guides were used in each city to get a true historical understanding and cultural color.

The three pictures shown in this article depict the fortress walls at Dubrovnik, the Mostar Bridge and the Kravica waterfalls on the Trebižat River, in the heartland of Herzegovina.

As a side note, the travelers reported that they were were initially unsure how well they would tour together.  You’ll be able to judge the outcome by the pictures and narrative that they provide.

After the presentation, other TVIH members/guests are invited to share their stories and photos of travel to Croatia and surrounding countries.

Next month, October, we’ll have a presentation on travels in the USA. This will include a visit to Utah National Parks; Hiking in Death Valley, CA; Grounds for Sculpture in NJ and more.
