Please join us for the next session focused aging in place/same house. The next session focuses on home modifications and in-law apartments with a focus on construction and implementation issues.

Our guest is local architect, Karen Pitsley, President, Transforming Architecture (www.TransformingArchitecture.com ). She is CAPS certified and active in Howard County modifications and community activities. The intended outcomes are more understanding of what changes are needed when, options, cost, and methods.

To prepare for the meeting please review the following:

1.  CAPS Checklist from Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) from the National Association of Home Builders https://www.nahb.org/learn/designations/certified-aging-in-place-specialist/related-resources/aging-in-place-remodeling-checklist.aspx

2. Sample costs of home modification. Caution, costs are from national studies; more local detail is needed. Note the recommended stages of modification and the costs related to each stage. https://erickson.umbc.edu/files/2018/04/Aging_in_Place_2.0_Report_FINAL-Web.pdf

3. Regulations on in-law suites and major modifications

Questions:

  1. What is CAPS and how does that differ from occupational therapist or AARP or other assessments?
  2. What modifications do I need and when do I need them?
  3. What does it cost?
  4. Are there options to phase in and how we budget and plan for that?
  5. How do modifications help/hurt resale value?
